Diving Holiday Destinations

Diving Holiday Destinations

One of the top diving holiday destinations in the world is the Maldives.  This amazing archipelago of over 1100 islands is home to a wide variety of dive sites and an even wider variety of marine life.  While there is an extensive diversity of reef-dwelling fish and smaller marine creatures, the real attraction of this diving holiday destination is the larger oceanic species that can be found here, including the whale shark, manta ray, eagle ray, grey reef shark, napoleon wrasse and several other shark species.  The Maldives is one of the few diving holiday destinations where divers can enjoy whale shark encounters throughout the year.

Diving Holiday Destinations within the Maldives

A single trip to the Maldives is not enough time for any scuba diver to truly enjoy what this spectacular archipelago has to offer.  There are several different diving holiday destinations with this island paradise.  Let’s take a closer look at some of the finest diving holiday destinations within the Maldives.

Spotted Eagle Rays are Common at this Diving Holiday Destination

Diving Holiday Destination: Hanifaru Bay

The amazing diving holiday destination, Hanifaru Bay, is a marine protected uninhabited island located in the Baa Atoll of the Maldives Islands.  Its size is no greater than that of a football field and yet it has become one of the hottest spots on the planet for underwater photographers.  The reason for this modern day phenomenon of underwater diversity is because plankton blooms between the months of May and November – a very unusual phenomenon – attracting manta rays by the hundreds.  At any one time at this diving holiday destination, there can be up to 200 manta rays feeding off the coral reefs as well as plenty of whale sharks which do the same.  Hanifaru Bay has become one of the best diving holiday destinations in the world for people looking for manta ray encounters.

Diving Holiday Destination: Baa Atoll

The Baa Atoll in the Maldives is a great diving holiday destination thanks to its many varied dive sites and also the high probabilities of spotting whale sharks. Dive sites in the Baa Atoll include Manta Point, Maavaru Kandu and Muthafushi Thila.  There are many resorts whose dive centers take divers to the sites around the Baa Atoll, but the best way to enjoy this diving holiday destination is by liveaboard.

Diving Holiday Destination: Ari Atoll

The Ari Atoll is another great diving holiday destination within the Maldives, offering a range of dive sites that include Maaya Thila, Broken Rock, Kudahrah Thila and Veligandu Kandu.  There are also good chances of seeing whale sharks in the Ari Atoll.

Destination Maldives

A trip to the diving holiday destination of the Maldives is best when enjoyed from the comfort of a liveaboard diving ship. Liveaboard diving holidays in the Maldives are great because you can cover far more area on a boat than when you have to return to a resort each night.  Liveaboard diving holidays include other activities as well as scuba diving, such as fishing, snorkeling, visiting island communities, beach parties and shopping excursions.

Diving Hints and Currents:

Banana Reef was the first dive site to ever be discovered in the Maldives and is still among the best. The best diving at this site is on the banana-shaped area in the northeastern where there are caves, gutters and overhangs filled with fish life and soft coral. Spend as much time as possible near the coral heads; if you begin the dive with your left shoulder to the reef, this is an excellent way to observe the area.

At Banana Reef, you are likely to see many fish, including Oriental Sweetlips, Giant Squirrelfish, Bannerfish and many other species that congregate in this spot. When the currents are strong, underwater turbulence can be experienced near the near the large overhang. Stay near the wall and don’t let the current push you away. A surface balloon is necessary as boat traffic can be heavy at times.

Taking Care of Your Precious Scuba Diving Gear

03.23.10

Scuba diving equipment maintenance is an extremely important task that any scuba diver should get used to. Part of ensuring that your dive will go smoothly, without encountering any underwater problems related to safety, is making sure that your scuba diving gear is properly maintained. Proper scuba diving equipment maintenance is also the key to make these precious investments last for long years.

Scuba Diving Gear Maintenance Tips

Maintaining your scuba diving mask is probably the easiest. All you need to do is rinse the mask with running fresh water and toothpaste in order to prevent fogging, and remove the accumulated bits of saltwater after a scuba diving session. The same thing should be done to your fins. Once you’ve done this, keep your equipment in a cool and dry place to prevent cracks and warping.

How to clean scuba diving BCDs

Your Buoyancy Control Device (BCD) is another important scuba diving gear that needs to be cleaned after a dive. To clean your BCD, pour a small amount of freshwater into the bladder and squeeze it out, in order to prevent the accumulation of salt crystals that may cause damage to its fabric. Also clean the oral inflator with antiseptic solution.

Scuba diving tanks should also be cleaned regularly if you want it to last for decades. Professional servicing every year is an absolute must.

Theia, like all liveaboards in the Maldives, is accompanied by an additional dive boat, known as a dive dhoni, from where all the dives are carried out.  All equipment is stored on this boat, making the guest experience on board even more comfortable since there is no need to carry dive gear from the main ship on to a secondary boat.  The dive dhoni also carries first aid and emergency equipment in case something should go wrong during the dive.  The compressor is also kept on the dhoni, so there is never any noise from the compressor on the main boat.

Deep End Restaurant At The Taj Exotica

03.17.10

Along with the many well regarded restaurants at the Taj Exotica is the Deep End restaurant.

The Deep End restaurant is more on the formal side of dining. So leave your sandy swim wear and board shorts behind for a formal dining experience on Frette linen set tables and a very long intense wine list that includes classics like Robert Mondavi To-Kalon I-Block Fumé Blanc.

Upon entering the Deep End restaurant you realize that the restaurant is actually a overwater dining room. With that great ambiance and tropical island dining feel is exceptional food. Along with all the great wine and dine at the Deep End, guests get to experience the great flavors with a romantically lit, marble and polised woods, and tables spread out a nice distance from one another.

We highly recommend the Moroccan-spiced spiny lobster medallions, fresh barramundi in a warm Seville orange mustard fizz.

With great wine comes great foie gras and its the best of the best of both at the Deep End restaurant. The menu is a long long list of tempting and mouthwatering courses and deserts. I reckon that guests should frequent the Deep End and try something new because its just so confusing. But as the food arrive the table coupled with your choice of wine, all that confusion becomes a great big blanket of culinary comfort and amazement. Choosing your meal will is going to be a tad taxing as you get a sensory taste crave overload upon gazing on the long list of gastronomical wonders to arrive at your table.

When we left, we were always given 2 small jars of lovely ground coffee, to enjoy the next morning, wrapped in sellophane and tied with gold twine. The service needless to say was amazing.

It is always a good idea to go back again and again for another delightful culinary and relaxing experience at the Deep End restaurant of the Taj Exotica Maldives.
